Tooth Extractions: Ensuring Your Comfort and Well-Being

At Bowker Creek Dental Clinic, we understand that tooth extraction may be necessary for various reasons. Whether it's for orthodontic preparation, impacted wisdom teeth, or addressing severe decay or damage, we're here to ensure your comfort throughout the process.

The Extraction Procedure

During a tooth extraction procedure, we take steps to ensure your comfort and well-being:

  • Anesthetic: We numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic, ensuring you don't feel pain during the extraction. Depending on the complexity of the extraction and your comfort level, we may also administer an intravenous sedative or anti-anxiety medication.

Types of Tooth Extractions

There are two primary types of tooth extractions:

  • Simple Extraction: This method is used when the tooth to be removed is visible in the mouth. General dentists can typically perform simple extractions, and you will receive local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure.

  • Surgical Extraction: A surgical extraction is necessary when the tooth is not visible in the mouth. This type of extraction is typically performed by an oral surgeon. In some cases, individuals with special medical conditions may receive general anesthesia for added comfort.

Healing and Recovery

After a tooth extraction, it's important to follow your dentist's post-procedure instructions for optimal healing and recovery:

  • Diet: Stick to soft foods for the first few days following the extraction to prevent any irritation or damage to the extraction site.

  • Drinking: Avoid using a straw for at least 24 hours, as the suction motion can disrupt the healing process.

  • Oral Care: While it's crucial to brush the rest of your teeth, avoid brushing the area close to the extraction site on the day after the procedure. Gently rinse with warm saltwater to keep the area clean and promote healing.

It's normal to experience some jaw soreness after the extraction, which typically subsides over time. However, some patients may develop a condition known as "dry socket." This occurs when a blood clot fails to form in the socket after extraction, leading to the exposure of underlying bone. If you suspect you have a dry socket, it's essential to seek prompt treatment to ensure a smooth and complication-free recovery.

At Bowker Creek Dental Clinic, your well-being is our priority during tooth extraction procedures. We're committed to your comfort and recovery, ensuring you leave our clinic with the best possible care.
